Walk to Elea!

project_042_2013

"Walk to Elea!", Machinima by 431art (Haike Rausch und Torsten Grosch) tells the story of the Avatars Laksmi Giha und Myth Guyot. The story is located on a virtual island situated in the parallel-world of the Metaverse second life. On their search for each other and their search for themselves both walk into a virtual cave, which is a mixture of deliberate architecture, temple and cave. From there both are transported into a labyrinth located in the sky surrounded by clouds. On its walls the source code of the first Second Life client can be seen - the code which genererates the existance of the avatar. The avatar itself is represented by the code, hence it’s own essence is being ruled by codestructure, one realizes that ones own existence is created by a source code. On the other hand the recipient is deprived of the illusion of identifying with the avatar. In this fashion the project exposes the very construction of what is perceived to be reality. The cave combines Platons cave simili which is known as ‚the’ metaphor for western thought and life within the boundaries of, existence and appearance; being and illusion. It is the metaphor of the labyrinth, the ancient image for finding your identity. The Eleatics were a school of pre-Socratic philosophers at Elea, a Greek colony in Campania, Italy. The group was founded in the early fifth century BCE by Parmenides.
Filmed entirely on Jewel { 54, 247, 21 }. The story takes place within a twentyfour hour cyclus.

Walk to Elea!

Michel Serres makes Zenon a pupil of Parmenides walk to Elea taking the “Northwest passage” –
Everything turns into an obstacle. Everything: from the mountain to the dust particle. The story of a way turns into the story of a long way round; into the story of a detour – always connected to question: Will he arrive? Will he ever arrive?
Serres is looking for a passage, which is connects the science of human beings with the science of the world. Parmenides (540/535 before Christ) wrote a single opus “About Nature”, a didactic poem of a journey “beyond the trodden paths”. At the end of the journey the narrator meets a nameless goddess, who tells him about the nature of reality/truth, but also about the nature of illusion. In his Cave Analogy, Parmenides’ student Plato introduces to epistemology using the concept of reality and illusion.
In “Walk to Elea” two avatars – Laksmi Giha and Myth Guyot – explore the virtual installation
“I’ll be your substitute whenever you want me” by 431art.
Starting in a building, which brings up the topos of the cave as “Anti-Space”, the visitor finds Parmenides’ core statements in the form of typographical projections onto invisible geometrical bodies. From this “Anti-Space” the protagonists teleport to a labyrinth, which consists of typographical projections of fragments of the sourcecode of the first “Second Life Viewers”.
The avatars are confronted with their own construction and at the same time with their own conditionality.
Via teleportation they get back to the coast. Back and seemingly arrived in Elea they initiate the Rites of the Nerds: Having coffee and more or less passing from one reality to another.

In "Walk to Elea!" erkunden zwei Avatare - Laksmi Giha und Myth Guyot - die virtuelle Installation "I'll be your substitute whenever you want me" von 431art.
